Why are the municipal and federal elections being held on the same day?

The Local Authorities Election Act fixes our municipal election date on the third Monday of October, every four years, and the Canada Election Act fixes the date of the federal election on the third Monday of October, every four years, as well. This means that both the municipal and federal elections are currently to be held on October 20, 2025.

Why are both municipal and federal elections fixed dates the same, especially given the known conflicts and competition for resources to conduct elections?

These dates are fixed by provincial and federal legislation. Federal elections often occur before the fixed date due to a vote of non-confidence or a dissolution of parliament. This means that in the past, the federal election has usually taken place in a different year than the municipal election.

If these two elections have to be held on the same day can the municipal and federal elections be coordinated to be at the same voting station locations?

No. The legislation limits who is allowed in the voting station. Only Strathcona County’s election officials and voters are allowed in a municipal election voting station.

The federal electoral boundaries and municipal electoral boundaries are different. Some voters would still have to go to different voting stations to vote in both elections.

When is Edmonton holding its municipal election? Shouldn’t municipal elections for the whole Edmonton region be held on the same day?

The City of Edmonton has not yet passed an election bylaw, so we do not know for sure. However, it is very possible that Edmonton holds its election on the Monday. Any questions on Edmonton’s election date should be directed to the City of Edmonton.

What will the County be doing with the election survey results?

The input received through the survey will support planning for the 2025 municipal election. County Administration may bring an Election Day Bylaw forward later this year for Council’s consideration to change the date to the Saturday.

How do I find out more about the municipal election?
