Vehicle for Hire Bylaw review.
Strathcona County is updating the Vehicle for Hire Bylaw to better reflect today’s transportation landscape and to support fairness, safety, and clarity for all operators and passengers.
As a follow-up to public and industry surveys fielded in 2025 and 2026, Strathcona County invited those connected to the Vehicle-for-Hire industry to gather and learn about proposed changes to Strathcona County’s Vehicle for Hire bylaw. A Vehicle for Hire Industry Forum took place on April 30. For information about the discussions, please refer to the What We Heard report for information.
The updated bylaw is expected go to Council on September 15, 2026.
Background Under theVehicle for Hire Bylaw,annual permits are required for Vehicle for Hire drivers and vehicles operating in Strathcona County. This bylaw applies to taxis, accessible taxis and limousines.
The County began accepting and processing applications on April 13, 2015. The Taxi Vehicle Permit fee is $465.75 and the Taxi Driver’s Permit fee is $51.75 (both are valid for one year). Permit application forms are available on the Taxi Permit Application web page or at the Enforcement Services office at 911 Bison Way in Sherwood Park.
Under the Taxi Cab Safety Bylaw, every taxi vehicle based in Strathcona County must be licensed and must prominently and permanently display:
Strathcona County taxi license plate on front of vehicle
Vehicle permit sticker affixed to lower left corner of front license plate
Inspection decal on the passenger side window
Taxi cab contact information and taxi vehicle number clearly visible on exterior of the vehicle
Taxi Driver's permit showing the driver's photo and name (located on the interior sun visor)
