Strathcona County understands the challenges excessive rainfall has posed for the agricultural community this growing season. County staff were actively engaging with local farmers, agricultural producers, agronomists, and neighbouring municipalities, throughout the summer months, while also conducting our own crop and field condition assessments.
On Tuesday, September 15, at the recommendation of the Agricultural Service Board and administration, Strathcona County Council declared a state of agricultural disaster for the county. Given the varying conditions across the county, the decision was made to document conditions throughout the summer to better understand the extent and severity of impacts in different areas. As additional information and feedback from farmers and producers became available, administration and the ASB provided Council with a recommendation that was evidence-based, informed by local conditions, and reflected what we heard from the community.
While a declaration does not trigger financial help, they are an important opportunity to build awareness of the impacts on the agricultural community.
